Reassessing Inflectional Regularity in Modern Greek Conjugation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Paradigm-based approaches to word processing/learning assume that word forms are not acquired in isolation, but through associative relations linking members of the same word family (e.g. a paradigm, or a set of forms filling the same paradigm cell). Principles of correlative learning offer a set of dynamic equations that are key to modelling this complex dynamic at a considerable level of detail. We use these dynamic equations to simulate acquisition of Modern Greek conjugation, and we compare the results with evidence from German and Italian. Simulations show that different Greek verb classes are processed and acquired differentially, depending on their degrees of formal transparency and predictability. We relate these results to psycholinguistic evidence on Modern Greek word processing, and interpret our findings as supporting a view of the mental lexicon as an emergent integrative system.

“My Small Slim Greek ASR System” or Automatic Speech Recognition of Modern Greek Broadcast News
In this paper we report on the development of a Modern Greek large-vocabulary continuous-speech recognition system. We discuss lexical modelling with respect to pronuciation generation and examine its effects on word accuracies. Peculiarities of Modern Greek as a highly inflectional language and their challenges for speech recognition are addressed.
متن کاملDevelopment of a Modern Greek Broadcast-News Corpus and Speech Recognition System
We report on the creation of a Modern Greek broadcast-news corpus as a pre-requisite to build a large-vocabulary continuous-speech recognition system. We discuss lexical modelling with respect to pronuciation generation and examine the effects of the lexicon size on word accuracies. Peculiarities of Modern Greek as a highly inflectional language and their challenges for speech recognition are d...
متن کاملAn electronic dictionary as a basis for NLP tools: The Greek case
The existence of a Dictionary in electronic form for Modern Greek (MG) is mandatory if one is to process MG at the morphological and syntactic levels since MG is a highly inflectional language with marked stress and a spelling system with many characteristics carried over from Ancient Greek. Moreover, such a tool becomes necessary if one is to create efficient and sophisticated NLP applications...
متن کاملRunning Head : THE MULTIPLE INFLECTION GENERATOR
The next challenge for connectionist models of the acquisition of inflectional morphology (IM) is to increase their generality: across inflectional paradigms, across grammatical classes, and ultimately across languages. We present a new model of IM that draws together elements of several existing connectionist models and which acquires multiple inflectional paradigms across three grammatical cl...
متن کاملAn Approach to Lexical Development for Inflectional Languages
We describe a method for the semi-automatic development of morphological lexicons. The method aims at using minimal pre-existing resources and only relies upon the existence of a raw text corpus and a database of inflectional classes. No lexicon or list of base forms is assumed. The method is based on a contrastive approach, which generates hypothetical entries based on evidence drawn form a co...
